Benchling alternatives
Benchling alternatives for biotech R&D teams in 2026
Ten platforms that biotech teams weigh against Benchling. All ten have an ELN, but their LIMS side ranges from an inventory list to a full LIMS. Here's what each does best, its AI, its published price and when Benchling is still the better fit.
ELN and LIMS
Why does the link between ELN and LIMS matter in a Benchling alternative?
Most Benchling alternatives cover the ELN well. They differ on what happens after the experiment is written up: whether the samples and results in an ELN entry become records in a LIMS. Some have a full LIMS, some only an inventory list, and in several an admin or the vendor sets up the LIMS fields in advance. That link decides whether your lab's data can be traced and reused.
- Every result traces back to its sample.Lineage across aliquots, pools and plates tells you where a number came from.
- Measurements land on the right well.Plate reader results attach to the sample in each well, so nobody copies numbers by hand.
- The same analysis works on the next plate.Samples and results are stored as structured records, so you can rerun an analysis on new data without rebuilding it.
- The schema keeps up with the science. In Benchling, only Registry admins can change entity and inventory schemas. In Signals Notebook, a system administrator sets up custom tables, and Scispot's own team configures Scispot. Ask each vendor who can add a field when an assay changes, and how long it takes.

The list
Which Benchling alternatives should you consider?
Cypher AI
Our productCypher AI is an ELN, LIMS and analysis platform with one AI agent that works across your experiments, samples and data.
- Best for
- Biotech teams whose assays change faster than a fixed schema allows. The LIMS tracks samples, plates, lineage and the measurement in each well. Scientists can add sample metadata fields as their assays change.
- AI
- The agent turns an ELN entry into samples and plate positions. It writes and runs analyses in Python and saves them as widgets the team reruns. By default it shows you a plan before it changes the LIMS. It runs on current Claude and GPT models (Claude Opus 5.5 was added in September 2026), and it checks its work: references against PubMed, and write-ups against the numbers its code produced.
- Pricing
- Free plan with the ELN and 15 AI messages a month. Pro is $50 per user a month, with the LIMS and unlimited AI messages. Enterprise runs in your own cloud account, with a forward-deployed engineer. Startups and academic labs can apply for discounts.
- Look elsewhere if
- you need a validated GxP system or a molecular biology registry like Benchling's. Cypher AI has Part 11–style signatures, review and an audit trail, but it isn't a validated system. It's also newer than most tools here, so it has fewer public reviews.
Working with the teamWork directly with the people building Cypher AI as you set up your lab's workflows. The team ships weekly releases, and every new account can book a free onboarding call.

FAQ
Questions about Benchling alternatives
Is there a free alternative to Benchling?
Yes. Cypher AI has a free plan with the ELN and 15 AI messages a month. SciNote has a free single-user plan and an open-source edition, LabKey's Community Edition is free to self-host, and Sapio's Bronze ELN is free for academics.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Benchling?
Benchling doesn't publish prices, so a fair comparison starts with your own quote. Of the tools here, Cypher AI, LabKey and Revvity Signals Notebook publish prices, and Cypher AI Pro is $50 per user a month with the LIMS and unlimited AI messages.
Is Benchling an ELN or a LIMS?
Both. Benchling's Notebook is its ELN, and Registry, Inventory and Workflows make up its LIMS side. An ELN records experiments, and a LIMS tracks samples, containers and the work done on them.
Which Benchling alternatives suit startups and small labs?
Look for a free start, a published price and a setup you can run yourself. Cypher AI and SciNote have free plans, and LabKey publishes its prices. Benchling's own startup program covers teams of 15 or fewer scientists with less than $25M raised.
How hard is it to move off Benchling?
Plan to export entries, sample records and files, then import them into the new system. In Cypher AI, the agent reads your Benchling exports and proposes the samples and records, and nothing is saved until you approve. You can also connect a Benchling tenant and run both during a pilot.
First steps
How do you try Cypher AI?
- Create a free account.Sign up with your email and start on the free plan.
- Bring one experiment over.Upload a file from your last experiment, or connect Benchling, and ask the agent to structure it.
- Add your samples.Turn on Pro when you need the LIMS, and hand the agent your sample spreadsheet.
For larger R&D teams, Enterprise includes a deployment in your own cloud account and an engineer who helps set up workflows and data integrations.
How we picked
How did we choose and check these tools?
Cypher AI is our product, so it's listed first. The others are in alphabetical order. Each has an ELN plus sample or LIMS features that a commercial R&D lab can buy today.
Features and prices come from each vendor's own pages, and where a vendor only quotes, we say so. Review sites were used only for common complaints. This compares published information, not hands-on tests.
