Best ELN 2026
The best electronic lab notebooks for biotech R&D in 2026
Ten ELNs for biotech teams and academic labs, compared on LIMS and sample tracking, AI, published prices and free options.
ELN plus LIMS
Why does an ELN need a LIMS behind it?
An electronic lab notebook records experiments. A LIMS tracks samples, locations and measurements. Connecting them helps your team find the sample behind a result and reuse the data in later work. How much happens automatically depends on the product and setup.
- Samples get IDs, locations and a history.Anyone can find a tube and see what was done to it.
- Results stay tied to the sample they came from.A measurement links back to the well, the plate and the source material.
- The next experiment builds on the last.Past results are queryable, so planning starts from data.

The list
Which ELNs should you consider?
Cypher AI
Our productCypher AI is an ELN, LIMS and analysis platform with one AI agent that works across your experiments, samples and data.
- Best for
- Biotech teams that want experiments, samples and results in one place. Samples in an entry become LIMS records, plate readings land on the right wells, and each result traces back to its source sample. The ELN has tables with formulas, version history and required signatures.
- AI
- The agent reads your ELN entries, samples, protocols and files. It proposes the samples an entry describes, writes and runs analyses in Python, and drafts protocols and cited literature reviews. By default you approve its plan before it changes the LIMS. It runs on current Claude and GPT models (Claude Opus 5.5 was added in September 2026), and it checks its work: references against PubMed, and write-ups against the numbers its code produced.
- Pricing
- The ELN is free on every plan, with 15 AI messages a month on Free. Pro is $50 per user a month, with the LIMS and unlimited AI messages. Enterprise runs in your own cloud account. Startups and academic labs can apply for discounts.
- Look elsewhere if
- you need a validated GxP ELN or ChemDraw built in. Cypher AI has Part 11–style signatures, review and an audit trail, but it isn't a validated system.
Working with the teamWork directly with the people building Cypher AI as you set up your lab's workflows. The team ships weekly releases, and every new account can book a free onboarding call.

- AI
- Benchling AI supports chat, analysis and structured data entry. Selected capabilities use monthly credits: 1,000 a month for 1 to 5 users, up to 10,000 for 25 or more. Unused credits expire at month end.
- Pricing
- Quote only. The startup program covers teams of 15 or fewer scientists with less than $25M raised. The academic plan is free for Notebook and Molecular Biology.
- Look elsewhere if
- you want a published price, or AI use that isn't capped by monthly credits.

- AI
- The Insight module adds AI and machine-learning analytics. IDBS shows an AI chat for Polar as under development, with an early access program.
- Pricing
- Quote only. No free plan or self-serve trial listed in the sources reviewed.
- Look elsewhere if
- you're a small team that needs a quick setup or a published price.

FAQ
Questions about electronic lab notebooks
What is the best electronic lab notebook for a biotech startup?
Look for an ELN that's free to start, keeps experiments structured and adds sample tracking when you need it. Cypher AI follows that path, and Benchling is the common choice for molecular biology through its startup program.
Is there a free electronic lab notebook?
Yes. eLabFTW is free and open source to self-host, and SciNote has a free single-user plan. Cypher AI and LabArchives have free plans, Benchling and Sapio have free academic plans, and RSpace is also open source.
How much does ELN software cost?
Published prices run from free to $1,425 per user a year. LabArchives Professional is $330 a year for academics and $575 for companies, per user. Cypher AI Pro is $50 per user a month, and Signals Notebook Standard is $1,425 per user a year. Most enterprise ELNs are quote only.
What is the difference between an ELN and a LIMS?
An ELN records experiments: the plan, notes, results and files. A LIMS tracks samples, containers and the work done on them. Cypher AI, Benchling, Labguru and SciSure include both.
What should I look for in an ELN for regulated work?
Look for required electronic signatures, entries that lock during review, an audit trail and a vendor that supports your validation. Benchling's Validated Cloud, IDBS, Labguru and SciNote offer validated setups. Cypher AI has Part 11–style signatures, review and an audit trail, but it isn't a validated system.
First steps
How do you try Cypher AI's ELN?
- Create a free account.Sign up with your email and start on the free plan.
- Write your next experiment.Start an ELN entry, attach a file or two, and ask the agent to help structure the write-up.
- Add your samples.Turn on Pro when you need the LIMS, and the agent turns the entry's samples into records you approve.
For larger R&D teams, Enterprise includes a deployment in your own cloud account and an engineer who helps set up workflows and data integrations.
How we picked
How did we choose and check these ELNs?
Cypher AI is our product, so it's listed first. The others are in alphabetical order. We picked the ELNs that biotech and academic buyers compare most often, plus two free options.
Features and prices come from each vendor's own pages, and where a vendor only quotes, we say so. Review sites were used only for common complaints. This compares published information, not hands-on tests.
