Private cloud ELN and LIMS 2026

The best private cloud ELN and LIMS platforms for enterprise biotech in 2026

We compared nine ELN and LIMS platforms on how they deploy, where your data can live, whether the ELN and LIMS come as one linked platform, and what their AI does with your data. For LIMS picks by lab type, see our best LIMS comparison.

Definitions

What do multi-tenant, single-tenant, your own cloud and on-premises mean?

They describe where an ELN or LIMS runs and who operates it. They overlap: a deployment in your own cloud account is usually single-tenant too. Vendors use "private cloud" for either, so ask which one they mean.

Deployment modelWhat it meansWho runs it
Multi-tenant SaaSMany customers share one copy of the application and its infrastructure. The software keeps each customer's data separate. The vendor
Single-tenant cloudYour organization gets its own copy of the application in the cloud. How far that goes varies: some vendors dedicate the servers, database and network, others only the database or the application. The vendor
Your own cloud accountThe deployment runs inside a cloud account your organization holds, on AWS, Azure or another provider. It's usually single-tenant, and some parts, such as the database or sign-in, may still run in the vendor's account. The vendor or your IT team, depending on the contract
On-premisesThe software is installed on servers in your own data center.Your IT team, usually with the vendor's support

Data residency means your lab's data is stored in a region you choose, such as the US or the EU. Ask where each part lives: the application, the database and the files. Check the AI separately: a prompt can be sent to a model in another region even when the records stay put.

Why one platform

Why should the ELN, LIMS and AI agent sit in one private deployment?

Each separate system is one more deployment to secure, validate and keep in region. It's also one more place where a result loses its link to the sample. Here are four common signs, and what changes in Cypher AI.

  • AI tools sit outside the deployment. In Cypher AI, the agent is part of the application Cypher AI operates in your cloud account. Model inference goes only to the providers and regional endpoints approved for your deployment, and by default nothing is saved until you approve the agent's plan.
  • Every new assay needs a change request. In Cypher AI, you add fields and material types as your assays evolve, without a separate schema-design project up front.
  • A result can't be traced to its sample. In Cypher AI, samples in an ELN entry become LIMS records you approve (in Beta), readings land on the right wells, and each result traces back to its source sample.
  • Each module is another contract. In Cypher AI, the ELN, LIMS, analysis, pipelines and agent come in one deployment, with AI included and a forward-deployed engineer.

Deployment and residency

How do these platforms deploy, and where can your data live?

Cypher AI, LabWare and L7|ESP offer a deployment in your own cloud account; IDBS and Benchling don't. Cypher AI is the only platform here that publishes a mainland China region. Tenancy can differ by layer, so the table uses each vendor's own wording.

Architecture, AI and data security

How do they compare on ELN and LIMS, AI and data security?

Seven of the nine run the ELN and LIMS on one platform. Dotmatics and Revvity Signals sell an ELN with inventory but no LIMS of their own.

The list

Which private cloud ELN and LIMS platforms should you consider?

  1. Cypher AI

    Our product

Cypher AI is an ELN, LIMS and analysis platform with one AI agent that works across your experiments, samples and data.

    Best for
Enterprise biotech R&D teams, research institutes and pharma groups that need their own deployment, data residency or control over AI models, and whose assays change from project to project.
    Deployment
Enterprise is a single-tenant cloud deployment in the US, the EU or mainland China. Cypher AI's engineers deploy, update and monitor the application in your cloud account, with its own servers, file storage and SSO sign-in. On AWS, records live in the deployment's own MongoDB Atlas database cluster, which Cypher AI runs outside your account. It runs in the cloud, not on-premises. A top-10 pharma company runs design of experiments on its own deployment, with one model provider and product-usage analytics disabled.
    AI
Give the agent an ELN entry or a spreadsheet, and by default it proposes the samples and plate positions for you to approve. Syncing from ELN entries is in Beta. The agent also saves analyses as widgets the team reruns on the next plate. You can connect your own Claude or ChatGPT through the API; there's no ready-made connector.
    Pricing
Enterprise starts at $25K per year, with AI included. That covers your own deployment with data residency, SSO, permissions and compliance controls, custom data integrations, and a forward-deployed engineer with priority support. Plans are on the pricing page.
    Look elsewhere if
you need an on-premises or air-gapped install, or a validated GxP system today. Cypher AI runs in the cloud and is built for R&D.

Working with the teamYou talk directly to the people who build Cypher AI, and on Enterprise a forward-deployed engineer sets up your workflows, LIMS fields and data integrations with you.

  2. Benchling

Benchling is a cloud R&D platform that pairs its Notebook with a Registry, Inventory and Workflows.

    Best for
Biotech organizations already standardized on Benchling that want a separate tenant for GxP work.
    Deployment
Multi-tenant on AWS, in the US or the EU. Validated Cloud adds a "dedicated, validated tenant" for GxP work, with quarterly releases and IQ/OQ support; Benchling doesn't say whether its infrastructure is dedicated. Only Benchling Inference, for running models, can run in your own VPC.
    Look elsewhere if
you need the platform in your own cloud account, a region outside the US and EU, or a published price.

FAQ

Questions about private cloud ELN and LIMS

What is a private cloud ELN or LIMS?

An ELN or LIMS that runs on cloud infrastructure dedicated to one organization, instead of a shared multi-tenant app. Vendors use the term for a single-tenant deployment they host, or for one in your own cloud account. It differs from on-premises, where the software runs on servers in your own data center.

What is the difference between a single-tenant and a multi-tenant LIMS?

In a multi-tenant LIMS, many customers share one copy of the application and its infrastructure, and the software keeps their data apart. In a single-tenant LIMS, your organization has its own copy, but vendors differ on which layers are dedicated: the application, the database, the servers or the network. IDBS, for example, gives each customer its own ELN instance but runs its Request module multi-tenant. Ask which layers are yours alone.

Can we run an ELN and LIMS in our own AWS account?

Yes, with some vendors. Cypher AI Enterprise runs the application in your own cloud account, in the US, the EU or mainland China, and Cypher AI's engineers operate it. On AWS, records live in a dedicated MongoDB Atlas cluster that Cypher AI runs, outside your account. LabWare offers "Your Cloud" with the provider you choose, and L7 says ESP runs on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. IDBS and Benchling don't offer it.

Which ELN and LIMS platforms offer EU data residency?

Cypher AI, Benchling and IDBS name an EU region, and Revvity Signals hosts in Germany. Check the AI separately. For Cypher AI deployments that need EU-only inference, the supported configuration is Claude through Amazon Bedrock, served in the EU (as of October 2026).

Does a private cloud deployment make an ELN or LIMS ready for 21 CFR Part 11?

Not by itself. Part 11 depends on controls such as audit trails, electronic signatures and access control, and on your own validation, wherever the system runs. Cypher AI supports Part 11–style audit trails and e-signature workflows. Benchling Validated Cloud, the IDBS GxP Cloud and LabWare SaaS come with validation support.

Where does the AI run in a private cloud ELN or LIMS?

Often with an outside model provider, not on the vendor's own servers. Benchling lists AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI and OpenAI, and Sapio uses Bedrock-managed models. Ask which providers, in which region, and whether your data trains their models. Cypher AI's agent uses only the providers you approve, and Cypher AI doesn't train models on customer data.

How much does a private cloud ELN and LIMS cost?

Cypher AI Enterprise starts at $25K per year, with AI included. It covers your own deployment with data residency, SSO, permissions and compliance controls, custom data integrations, and a forward-deployed engineer with priority support; plans are on the pricing page. Every other vendor on this list quotes its private and dedicated deployments.

How we picked

How did we choose and check these platforms?

Cypher AI is our product, so it's listed first. The others are in alphabetical order. We included platforms that enterprise biotech teams shortlist for an ELN and LIMS, or an ELN with sample management, and that offer more than a shared multi-tenant app. Thermo Fisher SampleManager and STARLIMS also offer cloud and on-premises deployments; we left them out because they're built mainly for QC and testing labs, and our best LIMS comparison covers them.

Deployment options, regions, AI and prices come from each vendor's own pages. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so. This compares published information, not hands-on tests.
