LabArchives alternatives
The best LabArchives alternatives for academic labs in 2026
Eight ELNs that university labs, core facilities and academic spinouts consider when they move off LabArchives, compared on academic price, structured data, AI and data security. For a general ranking of ELNs, see our best ELN comparison.
Why labs switch
Why do academic labs look beyond LabArchives?
LabArchives keeps a dated, signed research record, and many universities license it campus-wide. Labs look further when they want sample data they can search, analysis they can rerun and AI that works on their experiments. Four common reasons, and what changes in Cypher AI:
- Samples outlive the students who made them. The freezer box stays after a student graduates, and the page that explains it is text. In Cypher AI, samples become LIMS records with an ID, a location and a lineage, linked to the entry that made them, so the next student can trace each result to its source sample.
- LabArchives Forms require Enterprise.LabArchives Forms, which pool typed fields from many entries into one CSV, come with Enterprise licenses only. Inventory is a separate app that links reagents to notebook experiments. In Cypher AI, the ELN and the LIMS are one workflow on one set of records: the LIMS comes with Pro, and you add a field the day an assay needs it.
- Analysis happens in another tool.LabArchives links to GraphPad Prism and SnapGene through integrations. In Cypher AI, you map plate readings to wells and review them, then reuse a saved analysis widget for later plates that use the same assay and input format.
- AI works on images, not experiments.LabArchives extracts text and handwriting from images on Enterprise licenses, and screens figures through Proofig AI. In Cypher AI, one agent reads your entries, files and samples, and by default shows you its plan before it changes a LIMS record.

Structured data and AI
How do they compare on structured data and AI?
All eight store more than free text. Cypher AI, Labguru, openBIS and SciSure pair the ELN with a LIMS, while eLabFTW, RSpace and SciNote add an inventory. Cypher AI's agent can turn an ELN entry into sample records you approve, in Beta.
| Tool | Structured data | AI workflow automation | AI data security |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cypher AI | LIMS on Pro: samples, plates, lineage and readings on wells, linked to ELN entries. Add a field when an assay needs it | One agent across the ELN, LIMS and analysis. It proposes records from an entry (Beta) and writes Python analyses you save as widgets | No training on customer data. By default you approve the agent's plan before the LIMS changes. Enterprise picks the AI providers |
| Benchling | Sequences, primers and alignments in Molecular Biology. No Inventory or Registry on the academic plan | Benchling AI, free to try for verified academic accounts | Model providers may not train on customer data. On the academic version, Benchling keeps AI inputs and outputs for debugging, with longer retention |
| eLabFTW | Resources database for plasmids, antibodies, chemicals and cell lines, with storage containers | None | No AI. Data stays on your server or in the hosting region you pick |
| Labguru | ELN, LIMS and inventory in one platform | Labguru Assistant answers questions on your records. Agents build protocols from files and workflows from requests | Not stated on its AI page |
| openBIS | Inventory of materials and samples linked to experiments, plus a data store | None built in. Jupyter notebooks for analysis | No AI. Data stays on your servers or in Switzerland |
| RSpace | Inventory and registry for samples and equipment, linked to ELN documents | No built-in assistant. Outside agents connect through the API or an MCP server | Actions follow RSpace permissions and are logged and versioned. Approval depends on the connected agent |
| SciNote | Projects, experiments and tasks with protocols, plus inventory | Create with AI converts protocol PDFs into structured templates, guided by a prompt (Beta, planned paid add-on) | Only the protocol and prompt go to a third-party model, which doesn't keep or train on them. Off by default |
| SciSure | ELN, plus a LIMS for samples, inventory and workflows | Astra Iris answers product questions. SciSure MCP gives outside AI read-only access. Partner add-ons search the literature | AI is opt-in. SciSure MCP is read-only and follows each user's permissions |
| LabArchives, for reference | Rich text, attachments and widgets. Forms that pool fields into a CSV are Enterprise only. Inventory is a separate app | Text and handwriting extraction from images (Enterprise). Image checks through Proofig AI | Extraction is opt-in. Proofig screening runs in Proofig's own app |
The list
Which LabArchives alternatives should an academic lab consider?
Cypher AI
Our productCypher AI is an ELN, LIMS and analysis platform with one AI agent that works across your experiments, samples and data.
- Best for
- University labs, core facilities and spinouts that want structured records without a setup project. Samples in an entry become LIMS records, plate readings are mapped to wells for you to review, and each result traces back to its source sample. Start with the fields you use today, and add one when an assay needs it.
- AI
- The agent reads your entries, files and samples. It proposes the LIMS records an ELN entry describes (in Beta), writes and runs analyses in Python, and saves them as widgets your lab reruns. By default, nothing changes in the LIMS until you approve its plan. Cypher AI doesn't use customer data to train AI models.
- Pricing
- The free plan includes the ELN and 15 AI messages a month. Pro adds the LIMS and team features, with AI included, and the Academic Program takes up to 50% off. Prices are on the pricing page.
- Look elsewhere if
- you need a validated GxP system, or software installed on your university's own servers. Cypher AI is built for R&D and runs in the cloud.
Working with the teamWork directly with the people building Cypher AI as you set up your lab's workflows. Every new account can book a free onboarding call.

FAQ
Questions about LabArchives alternatives
Is there a free alternative to LabArchives?
Yes. Cypher AI's free plan includes the ELN and 15 AI messages a month, and Benchling's academic plan is free for its Notebook and Molecular Biology tools. eLabFTW and openBIS are free to self-host, and SciNote has a free plan for one user.
How much does LabArchives cost for an academic lab?
LabArchives Professional is $330 per user a year at the academic rate, or $360 with Inventory. The free plan has 2 notebooks and 1 GB per user. Many universities buy an Enterprise site license instead, priced by quote.
Does LabArchives have AI features?
Two, both for images. Enterprise licenses can extract text and handwriting from images, and the Proofig AI integration screens notebook images for integrity issues. LabArchives has no AI assistant that works across entries or sample data.
Which ELN can turn experiment notes into structured data?
One that stores samples and results as records, not only as text. In Cypher AI, the agent reads an ELN entry and proposes the samples, plates and materials it describes as LIMS records, then saves them when you approve. Syncing entries to the LIMS is in Beta.
How do you move notebooks out of LabArchives?
LabArchives exports a notebook as a PDF, or as an offline HTML copy that includes attachments under 250 MB. Keep that export as the archive of your original notebook, and check its attachments, links, signatures and audit history there, since they don't become Cypher AI records. Move samples separately: start with a sample spreadsheet, and the agent proposes sample records that you review before anything is imported.
Is it safe to use AI on unpublished research data?
Ask each vendor three things: whether it trains models on your data, which AI providers see it, and whether AI can change records without you. Cypher AI doesn't use customer data to train AI models, and by default the agent shows its plan before it changes the LIMS. On Enterprise, you choose which AI providers the agent can use.
First steps
How do you move a lab from LabArchives to Cypher AI?
- Create a free account.Start on the free plan and write your next experiment in the ELN.
- Apply to the Academic Program.Applying is a short call. Pro adds the LIMS and team features, at up to 50% off for academic labs.
- Keep your LabArchives archive.Export your notebooks as PDF or offline HTML and keep them as the record of the original work. Check attachments, links, signatures and audit history there, since they don't become Cypher AI records.
- Bring your samples over.Start with a sample spreadsheet. The agent proposes the sample records it describes, and you review them before anything is imported.
For an institute or academic medical center that needs its own deployment, data residency or SSO, Enterprise runs as a single-tenant cloud deployment in your own cloud account, in the US, the EU or mainland China, with a forward-deployed engineer.
How we picked
How did we choose and check these tools?
Cypher AI is our product, so it's listed first. The others are in alphabetical order. We picked ELNs that university labs and core facilities weigh when they leave LabArchives: commercial platforms with academic plans, and free, open-source options.
Features and prices come from each vendor's own pages, and where a vendor only quotes, we say so. This compares published information, not hands-on tests.
